Veterans Day

November 11 All day

You may be aware that November 11th is the day when Veterans Day is observed each year, but did you know that this day was originally called Armistice Day? In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11th a holiday to observe the end of fighting in World War I that had occurred the year prior on that date. Later, following the second World War, Congress replaced “Armistice” with “Veterans” in 1954 at the urging of veterans’ service organizations, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day Proclamation in October that same year. From then to present day, this holiday is an opportunity “to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.” You can learn more about the history of this holiday through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.
