Guaranteed Education Tuition (GET) tuition benefits - public in-state 4-year college.

Your 100 GET units are guaranteed to match the cost of resident undergraduate tuition and state-mandated fees at Washington's most expensive public university, either the U. of Washington or Washington State U. Use GET units at any of Washington's public 4-year colleges; the monetary value is the same. If tuition at the college is lower than tuition and state-mandated fees at the UW or WSU, GET units can be used for room and board, books, or other qualified higher education expenses.

Guaranteed Education Tuition (GET) benefits have time limitations.

The beneficiary has up to ten years after his or her projected enrollment date, that was established when the account was opened. This is generally set for age 18 or when the beneficiary will graduate from high school. From the first distribution, the beneficiary has ten additional years to use his or her account.

What are the tax advantages of the GET Program?

Because the GET program is a state 529 plan, the after-tax money you put into your account will grow tax-free. And, when your child is ready for college, the money you withdraw will be tax-free, as long as you use it for qualified higher education expenses.

Who can open an account, and when is the best time to start?

You can open an account for anyone — a child, grandchild, friend or even yourself. Either the account holder or the beneficiary needs to be a Washington resident at the time the account is opened. College tuition rises each year, so it's best to start your prepaid plan early. Custom monthly plans include a finance charge, and current unit prices reflect a premium that make the GET program a better way to save when held for four to five years. GET units purchased in Lump Sum ten years ago have more than doubled in value.

Are there federal gift and estate tax benefits?

Contributions to GET accounts are considered completed gifts for federal estate and gift tax purposes. Therefore, the value of the account is generally not included in the account owner's estate. Additionally, an account owner may elect to combine five years of contributions into one, without exceeding the single beneficiary gift tax allowance. Please consult your tax advisor for further clarification on federal estate and gift tax regulations.
